In general, my research focuses on the influence of parent-child communication patterns on socio-emotional development. In the Preschoolers Emotional Development Study, I am currently examining the processes by which parents contribute to the socialization of childrens emotion regulation, such as through parents emotional expressivity and communication style. Furthermore, I am examining what may underlie these socialization processes, such as parents beliefs and representations of emotions. An additional line of my research is focused on the function of anticipatory event conversations between parents and their children and the development of future-oriented processes. Future-oriented processes include the way in which children think of themselves, others, and events in a future-oriented temporal context. I am particularly interested in how the development of these future-oriented skills are fostered in the family. This work is integrated in the Development of Self Concept Study. I am currently a Program Officer for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
