We study how the environment regulates the effects of steroid hormones (primarily estrogen) on social behavior. Although hormones are usually thought to either facilitate or inhibit specific behaviors, we have found that the same hormone can have opposite effects on behavior depending on the environment. We are also exploring whether our behavioral results are relevant to estrogen-dependent cancers. Studies in the lab take an integrative approach to studying behavior and use a variety of cellular and molecular techniques.
