Through dramatizations of four different women's stories, this video depicts the problems faced by Black women who are sexual partners of male IV drug users. The stories include a woman whose husband refuses to use condoms, has been clean for several years but who spends time with his brother, an IV drug user; a recently-married woman who learns that a friend with whom she was briefly involved sexually now has AIDS; a woman who becomes sexually involved with an affluent man who eventually gives her an STD; and a former prostitute and IV user who has recently learned she is infected with HIV and is trying to stay clean and care for her children.
The video consists of a series of vignettes, alternating from one story to another, with a support group that includes all of the characters at the conclusion. In the support group, advice is given for each of the characters, and all of the women are encouraged to respect themselves and to take care of themselves. The video emphasizes that because men and women both have secrets, it is necessary to protect oneself from AIDS. The video's format allows for an AIDS educator to interject brief discussions of relevant issues at appropriate points. This video targets sexually-active African American women, married or single. It effectively dramatizes the need for communication between sexual partners as well as condom use. However, the video does not portray any instances of a woman effectively negotiating condom use with her partner. Nor does the video explain the specifics of safer sex, such as how to use a condom. Rather, it depicts the disastrous consequences of failing to use condoms, and encourages female viewers to adopt an attitude of self-respect and self-preservation. The video will be useful primarily in conjunction with other AIDS education presentations. Its format permits discussion after each vignette about how the character might have handled her situation more effectively. Technically, the video is of high quality and employs professional actors. |
