This dramatization depicts a group of five close friends, young Black and Hispanic males living in New York, as they confront issues of sex, drugs, and AIDS. Skyman, the group's informal leader, dropped out of school and is selling crack on the streets. His brother, who also sold crack, is now dying of AIDS. Miguel is determined to have sex with a large number of women. Chris, an athlete who hopes for a college scholarship, is coming out as a gay man. Andy is devoted to his girlfriend. José is looking for his first sexual experience.
In the course of the video, the friends discuss safe sex negotiation, how to use a condom correctly, the ways in which HIV is and is not transmitted, and the dangers of drug use. Several examples are provided of negotiating condom use. Correct use of a condom is demonstrated. At the conclusion of the video, the audience is told that two of the characters have died – Miguel of AIDS and Skyman of a gunshot wound. This video will be most effective with urban Black and Hispanic young males, although some sections portraying partner negotiation will be relevant to female viewers as well. The video depicts the dangers of HIV transmission primarily through unprotected heterosexual and homosexual intercourse, although other routes of transmission are also mentioned. It also confronts viewers attitudes toward gay people and people with AIDS. Demonstrations of condom use and partner negotiation are well-integrated with the dramatization. Technically, the video is of high quality. The visuals and audio are interesting and well-paced. The acting is of professional quality. |
