This video presents information about AIDS and HIV for a young adolescent audience. Major themes are that AIDS is not only a homosexual disease, that AIDS is not transmitted by casual contact, and that AIDS is fatal. Viewers are told that they are probably not at risk for AIDS now, but they must educate themselves to be safe in the future. Transmission of HIV through sexual intercourse and sharing needles is discussed, and viewers are advised to avoid both sex and drug use, regardless of peer pressure.
Three preteens are featured who provide information about AIDS and describe a club they formed after a schoolmate died of AIDS; the club's purpose is to spread accurate information about how AIDS is and is not transmitted. This video will be most appropriate for preteens and young adolescents who have not yet begun to have sex and who do not use drugs. Strengths of the video include its use of repetition to emphasize important points, the effort to establish norms for overcoming peer pressure and remaining safe from HIV, and the use of viewers' peers and a young role model to convey information about AIDS. Another strength is that the video provides ideas for viewers to take action against AIDS by helping to educate their peers. The appearance of the school and students featured in the video is suburban and middle-class; consequently, it may not appeal to inner city youth. In addition, the host's comment about condoms that "no preventative works 100 percent of the time" may instill doubts about the efficacy of condoms; this may discourage sexually active teens from using condoms. Technically, the video is of high quality. |
