In this video, Lee Jenkins and Sterling White – two African American adult males who are former drug addicts – discuss their work as members of an AIDS street outreach program in poor Black neighborhoods of Atlanta, Georgia. They discuss the problems of IV drug use and AIDS in poor Black communities.
The video includes several scenes of White and Jenkins interacting with Blacks on urban streets and in housing projects. Jenkins and White talk about their own personal history of drug addiction, recovery, and subsequent work on the street. They stress that pain and suffering are primary reasons for drug use. Barriers to effective intervention discussed include: denial, the lack of treatment programs in the prisons and in neighborhoods, and the lack of credibility of those who provide information about HIV/AIDS, including Black ministers. Jenkins and White emphasize the need for resources to be focused in high risk communities in order to establish trust and make services accessible. This video will be effective with African American IV drug users and former users, as well as with drug counselors and AIDS educators working with African American men. The video's principal focus is on the need for drug users to have safe sex, to stop sharing works, and to seek treatment. The discussion of the larger cultural context in which drug use occurs is effective. However, the video does not provide specific instructions for having safe sex and cleaning works. The visuals and audio are of good technical quality. The video is fairly slow-paced, with many long scenes of White or Jenkins talking to the camera. Consequently, audiences with a short attention span may lose interest in it. |
