This documentary describes the experiences of living with AIDS, preparing to die, and grieving after death. Interviews with a variety of people with AIDS and their caregivers (including caregivers who themselves have AIDS) are featured.
The video is divided into three parts. In Part 1, the focus is on living with AIDS and recognizing the eventuality of death. People with AIDS and their loved ones describe the importance of maintaining a positive attitude, having support from their loved ones, and taking control. Experiences with stigma are discussed. Part 2 focuses on the time when death is imminent. Different people with AIDS and their caregivers discuss preparing for death. Again the importance of social support is emphasized. Part 3 focuses on the grieving process after a person with AIDS has died. Different caregivers describe their reactions immediately after a loved one died, as well as the ways in which they have started to accept the loss and live their lives again while still retaining their memories and love for the person who died. This video will be most appropriate for people with AIDS and their caregivers. By sampling a broad range of experiences and ways of coping with death from AIDS, it provides viewers with a variety of models for coping. A powerful effect is created by including interviews with PWAs and their caregivers while the person was alive, as well as interviews with the caregivers after the PWA has died. Many audience members will feel that they have gotten to know some of the PWAs, and will experience some sense of loss when they confront the fact that the person died. Another strength is that the video describes the experiences of people with diverse sexual orientations, racial backgrounds, ages, and class backgrounds. Technically the video is of high quality. |
