This hour-length documentary, hosted by George Strait, explores the impact of AIDS on communities of color, especially the African American community. Beginning with the death of television newscaster Max Robinson, the video makes a strong case that AIDS is a serious problem for minority communities. Interviews are included with PWAs, community activists, and leaders, including Rev. Jessie Jackson, Representative Kweisi Mfume, Dr. Beny Primm, and Roger Wilkins. Topics explored include limited access to health care in minority communities, the role of the Black church, homosexuality and bisexuality, drug use, and prostitution.
This documentary provides an overview of the impact of AIDS on the African American community and, to a lesser extent, on the Hispanic community. Because its focus is the social impact of AIDS, it does not provide detailed information about AIDS transmission or risk-reduction. Apart from the general information it provides (some of which is now out of date), it may be useful for stimulating discussion about the significance of the AIDS epidemic for people of color in the United States. Its credibility is enhanced by its inclusion of community leaders, experts, and activists. Technically, the video is of high quality. Because of its length, however, it may not be appropriate in its entirety for an audience expected to have a short attention span. |
