This video describes the consequences of having AIDS and provides information and encouragement about sexual responsibility and condom use. Dramatizations, animation, rap music, personal narratives of PWAs, interviews with teens, and messages from celebrities are intermingled to give the video an eclectic production style.
Messages emphasize that viewers are at risk for AIDS, that infection can be passed through several generations of sexual partners, that they should use condoms or abstain from sex, and that they should avoid drug use. Humor is used in segments about an “AIDS nerd” (who fears casual contact) and a condom demonstration. The video’s fast pace and its use of a variety of formats make it likely to hold the attention of teen and young adult viewers. Including the stories of people with AIDS, particularly a teen with AIDS, may help viewers to recognize their own vulnerability to infection. The video’s general orientation is to assume that many viewers are having sex and to tell them how to do it safely; in addition to condoms, non-penetrative forms of sexuality are mentioned. One limitation of the video is that most of the people appearing in it are White or middle class; consequently, it may not be appropriate for use with teens outside these groups. Technically, the video is of high quality. |
