Seven teenagers and young adults who are HIV-positive (including two with AIDS) discuss their experiences. They describe their past beliefs that they could not get AIDS and explain how their sense of invulnerability contributed to their risk behaviors. They detail their experiences learning that they were infected, problems with medication and physical illnesses, experiences with stigma, and fears and expectations about dying. They strongly urge others to recognize their own risk for infection and to use condoms.

This video will be useful primarily for college-age heterosexual audiences. By presenting the personal experiences of peers, it directly confronts the denial of risk and sense of invulnerability that are often present in this population. The video can be used as an effective trigger for discussions about personal risk and responsibility, safer sex, and the consequences of risk taking.

The video consists of visuals of the 7 interviewees. Quality editing and the powerful content of their stories will make this format effective for holding audience interest. Educators may wish to supplement the video with other informational materials concerning HIV transmission, condom use and safer sex techniques, and stigmatization of people with AIDS. There is no explicit discussion of safer sex guidelines beyond using condoms. Condom use is not demonstrated.
