This video documents a two-day seminar in which 10 professional comedians train nine PWAs to perform stand-up comedy. Their work culminates with “The Last Laugh,” a stand-up comedy show. The focus is on the empowerment and self-assurance that PWAs experience through the process of learning stand-up comedy routines. The video shows the interactions between comedians and PWAs as they write and rehearse their material, and is interspersed with clips from the comedy show.
The documentary shows how exploring the positive and humorous aspects of pain and death can enable one to view them from a different perspective, one that diminishes their ability to generate fear and despair. The PWAs discuss the power of laughter and optimism in their daily lives, emphasizing their need to find things to enjoy about life. The comedians gain considerable understanding of PWAs and about living in a positive manner in the face of adversity. The film is a poignant and touching portrait of empowered PWAs fighting to make their lives full and meaningful. It provides a compelling model for living positively with HIV disease. The technical quality of the video is high. It skillfully edits scenes from the workshop with clips from the stand-up show. |
