The focus of this video is safer sex techniques for gay and bisexual men. Clear and candid information is offered on safer sex practices, HIV disease, and eroticizing safer sex. The video also address the difficulty of discussing HIV serostatus, the need for condom negotiation, and the importance of open communication between partners. Safer sex scenarios are demonstrated by gay men of various ethnicities and backgrounds in intimate settings. Explanations and admonitions are made by a medical expert, on-the-street interviewees, and a host.

The video acknowledges that some men prefer an open relationship or “playing the field.” Drinking and drug use are discussed in a nonjudgmental manner. The video advocates responsible use of drugs, explaining how substance use can impair judgment and increase sexual risk taking. It emphasizes the importance of fantasy, role-playing, and fetishes.

The video also addresses feelings of invulnerability to HIV that many young gay men experience, which can lead to sexual risk taking; and the thoughts and feelings of HIV-positive men in regard to the responsibility they feel that they have to protect themselves and others.

This South African video’s technical quality is excellent; it uses engaging and creative images, realistic sets, and mood lighting to create a production that is intimate and instructive. It is sexually explicit only in two visuals, which depict condom use; other visuals appear to be constructed to avoid depiction of a penis. The video’s musical soundtrack is somewhat ominous, and the video concludes with the somber statement, “Our parents used condoms to prevent birth, today we are using them to prevent death.” The video has many similarities to the British production, The Gay Man’s Guide To Safer Sex, but is less sexually explicit.
