A mother discusses the impact of AIDS on her gay, HIV-positive son and herself. Susan, the mother, begins the interview-based documentary by discussing how she learned of Joshua’s sexual orientation at age 16. She wishes he would have come to her earlier, and hopes that other adolescents dealing with sexual orientation issues will seek out a trusted adult. Susan appeals to other parents of gay men to work toward acceptance and understanding of their sons.

Susan describes the steps that she went through to gain a better understanding of her son’s HIV disease. When she was informed of Joshua’s diagnosis, she was enraged by the unfairness of the situation. She points out that parents are not supposed to outlive their children, and reports that she used denial to deal with the situation and isolated herself from friends and family. Later she decided to make the most out of the remaining time that she and Joshua could share. A support group for family and friends of PWAs helped Susan by allowing her to connect with other people affected by HIV disease.

This video is part of a series that includes Joshua And His Doctor: Before And After The HIV Test and Joshua: A Student Challenging HIV Infection. The production quality is good. This video gives the viewer an insightful glimpse of a parent who is dealing with the HIV diagnosis of her child in a supportive, loving, and understanding manner.
