This documentary is filmed in the Latino barrios of Philadelphia. It consists of a series of interviews of people who are living with AIDS as well as street interviews with people from the Latino community. The latter provide their views on drug dealing and injecting drug use; homosexuality and bisexuality; male-female relationships and the role of women in society; condom use; and attitudes toward people diagnosed with AIDS.
The interviewees appear to be predominantly of Puerto Rican heritage. The interviews are structured around the narration of Rev. Floyd Naters-Gamarra, who approaches the issue of AIDS in U.S. Latino communities as a problem whose roots lie in unemployment and illegal drug use. Although the interviewees exemplify some of the attitudes and beliefs predominant among Latinos in the United States today, they also tend to highlight the downsides of some of the cultural values that could impede HIV/AIDS prevention. Twelve of the 36 people interviewed are women; of them only three display accurate knowledge about HIV/AIDS. Many of the men display stereotypical "machista" Latino male attitudes. This video deals predominantly with psychosocial issues related to AIDS. There is no specific information regarding transmission routes, casual contact, or demonstration of condom use or needle cleaning. The only AIDS prevention information given is summarized by the graphic at the conclusion of the video which advises viewers to "use condoms" and "if you must use drugs, clean your works." The language used in the video varies from extremely formal to the use of street language and slang terminology. Latino cultural values that are emphasized are familismo (family members are interviewed), religiosity and respect (the narrator is a religious leader), machismo (in the expressions of most of the men interviewed). Homophobia in the Latino community is discussed. The overall technical quality of the video is good. |
