This video dramatizes the story of Julia, a Latina young adult who has recently left her abusive husband and moved back home. Now, two years later, Julia works at her mother's beauty shop, has gone back to school, and has become active in "Women to Women," an organization dedicated to promoting AIDS awareness among Latino women. When Julia realized that she was at risk for the AIDS virus, she decided to get tested. She tested HIV-positive and is now dedicated to the cause of helping Latinas become informed and protect themselves. She is helping to organize a demonstration of women against AIDS, and decides to speak out about herself to encourage other women in the community to do the same and help stop the spread of the virus.
The story depicts a variety of AIDS related issues, including high risk behaviors, safer sex, condom negotiation, homosexual and bisexual relationships, AIDS-related prejudice, and stereotypes. There is little or no information provided regarding specific transmission routes, casual contact, proper condom use, and IV-drug related issues. The characters in this video appear to be Puerto Rican or of Puerto Rican heritage. The production appeals to the values of familismo (the importance of the family in Julia's case), machismo (verbal and physical aggression against women, extramarital sexual activity, refusal to wear condoms, heavy drinking); and hembrismo (women taking action to protect themselves and their families, women assuming responsibility of their lives and households in the absence of a man). The Spanish video is a voice-over dub of the English version. The content of what is said in Spanish reflects the English version, but, overall, the acting quality of the voice-over characters is poor. The overall technical quality of the video is good.
