This video presents three lengthy interviews with HIV-positive Puerto Rican women about living with AIDS. The women explain how they were infected (unprotected sexual contact, IV drug use, and transfusion); how they, their families, and friends have responded to their diagnosis; the difficulties of finding appropriate support and drug treatment programs; their fears once they disclosed their status; and the isolation and solitude that AIDS patients often experience. The video appeals strongly to familismo (the family is presented as the principal source of support) and religiosity (religious and spiritual groups play important roles in the interviewees’ decisions). Specific information about HIV prevention is not presented.
The video’s technical quality is adequate. Its effectiveness is reduced by excessive background noise, abrupt edits, and static camera shots (in one instance, a shot lasts more than 15 minutes). The audio quality of questions by the off-camera interviewer is poor. Because of these technical problems, the video may not hold the attention of some viewers. |
