Confidence without consciousness: Evidence of implicit temporal awareness for the timing of self-initiated action
SPEAKER: Eve Isham (Postdoc, Geng Lab)
The perceived timing of intent and action has been used as a way to index consciousness. However, recent evidence suggests that these reports may be easily distorted; that we may not have a representation of temporal information. To test this hypothesis, we asked naïve participants to press a button that resulted in either an immediate or delayed tone presentation. The participants reported the moment of intent or action and provided confidence scores about their reports. The results showed that while the observers relied on the timing of the tone to formulate their temporal reports, thus implying the absence of explicit temporal awareness, their confidence data nevertheless suggest that these observers were implicitly conscious of the temporal mismatch between action and the delayed tone. Overall these findings provide evidence that temporal information is represented and that implicit temporal awareness may better serve as an index of consciousness.

PCCN Alumna Talk: Attentional states in the medial temporal lobe
    SPEAKER: Mariam Aly (Postdoc, Princeton)
Attention enhances a range of cognitive processes, including perception and memory. The enhancement of perception has been linked to modulation of cortical areas in the brain that code for the sensory information of interest. When it comes to memory, however, it is unknown how attention modulates key brain systems, particularly subregions in the medial temporal lobe. In a high-resolution fMRI study, we examined attentional modulation of the hippocampus using a novel art museum task designed to draw heavily on cognitive processing in this region. On each trial, participants were presented with a target room rendered in 3D, which contained a painting and several pieces of furniture. They then viewed four more rooms (each containing a painting), and had to search for either the same room in a different perspective (room state), or a painting created by the same artist (art state). Critically, the same trials were repeated over time in both tasks, which controlled the physical stimuli and allowed top-down attentional states to be identified. This task revealed...really cool results, which you will have to come to the talk to see. Really, come.
