Pt. Reyes Field Seminar - 1st Annual Point Reyes Mushroom Camp
9:30 AM Sat - 4:00 PM Sun • $175 ($160 members)
Spend an intensive weekend in the woods at the height of the local mushroom season with fellow beginning and intermediate mushroom enthusiasts. Instructor David Campbell will lead guided forays into diverse wild mushroom habitats. Basic instruction in mushroom hunting, identification and proper handling will culminate in a cooking demonstration of the edible wild mushrooms we may find. Using the species we collect, along with those David will bring, we’ll develop a fungi display table for ongoing mycological discussion. Locally-renowned mushroom guru Norman Andresen will accompany us, sharing his considerable mycological expertise. Saturday evening’s entertainment will include a PowerPoint presentation on “Fungimental Mycophagy” by David Campbell, along with an insightful and colorful examination of the basics of eating wild mushrooms. The fungi bar is open! Accommodations, with optional Friday evening arrival, are included at our base camp, the Clem Miller Environmental Education Center.
Sat. 2/20 Pt. Reyes Field Seminar - Stalking the Wild Mushroom
10:00 AM - 4:30 PM • $65 ($55 members)
We’ll begin indoors with a discussion of identification methods, followed by a foray into the nearby woods to continue our discussion and hunt for mushrooms to examine and collect. In addition to talking about the local edible and poisonous varieties, we’ll also address the vital roles that mushrooms play in the planet’s ecosystems, along with uses of native mushrooms for medicine, paper making and colorful dyeing. Students are encouraged to bring in specimens for identification and discussion. Learn the basics needed to begin to identify wild mushrooms, including: terminology, techniques, spore prints, specimen displays, using ID keys, and more.
