Course Description: The goal of this course is to gain an in-depth knowledge of the mental health of various ethnic minority groups. The course will primarily focus on African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Native Americans, although many of the issues examined have relevance for other ethnic groups in and outside of the United States. We will learn about how different cultures define mental health and mental disorders, how social scientists determine rates of mental disorders, the influence of culture and minority group status, utilization and effectiveness of mental health services and treatment, and other issues affecting the mental health of ethnic minority groups.
