Annual Department DEI Goals

Many department committees set annual DEI goals to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion in specific aspects of the department. Goals are listed here for transparency and accountability.

2021-2022 DEI Goals (Strikethrough when accomplished)

Instructional Innovation and Support 
Chair: Tor Cross

  • Hear from our students about their wants and needs in our classes: By Spring 2022, gather and analyze data from a student survey on their positive and negative inclusion experiences in higher education.
  • Increase representation in our course content: By Spring 2022, recruit one area team to start identifying content.
  • Remove barriers in our course mechanics: By Fall 2022, gather details on promising practices that align with the results from our student survey.

 

Mentoring and Personnel Advancement 
Chair: Lisa Oakes

  • Members will learn more about what it takes and what it means to be effective mentors to diverse faculty, to improve the inclusive excellence of the department’s mentoring programs.
  • Write a report synthesizing “best practices” 
     

Departmental Visibility
Chair: Cam Hostinar

  • Organize and promote a graduate school open house for URM students (summer) to teach the "hidden curriculum" of applying to graduate schools (open to UC Davis students and students from other universities). 
  • Promote the accomplishments and works of diverse students, postdocs, and faculty on Twitter.
     

Space 
Chair: Ron Mangun
DEI Liaison: Lindsey Mooney

  • Redesign the primary Entryway/Welcome Space of Young Hall in conjunction with Anthropology to make it a welcoming and accessible space for all students.
  • Carve out spaces for community and gathering at Young Hall.

 

Distinguished Speaker Committee
Chair: Shelley Blozis
DEI Liaisons: Diego Placido & Shelley Blozis 

  • Develop and launch a permanent student-curated distinguished speaker series in which students nominate speakers who reflect our goals of promoting diversity in the field.

 

Trainee Recruitment/Retention/Support 
Chair: Eliza Bliss-Moreau
DEI Liaisons: Shea Duarte & Yuko Munakata

  • Shadow committee will sort through graduate applications to pair applicants with potential mentors to catch those who might fall through the cracks of traditional review procedures
  • Develop summer research program & research-focused course
